What is the difference between ers and trs
I have been trying to get someone to share this for a long time. It is just knowledge that teachers need to have when talking to legislators. It took a lot of time to put it together because I wanted to include the source for each item in the chart! Thank you for doing this!!! It is long overdue! We tried so hard, Martha! The bad news is that they did not fix it. That secures the pensions for both active and retired TRS members and was a huge win!
This is what we have to do! The reason we got that, the pay increase for active employees, and the 13th check for retirees is because they can see we are growing larger and stronger! The Texans for Public Education push to block vote for the last election was huge. Not everyone is able to write a beautiful post, a good and intelligent person is able to write a beautiful post, it is not that everyone writes better, to write a better post, the mind must also be clear and your post is very Beautiful, I think your mind will also be very clear.
I too constantly try to write a better post in my life and I am very inspired to see your post. This is a tactic that the rich and politician's use, to turn the public against pensions, and blame the pension retirees for all the nations debt and financial problems. Look online at all the State Governors attacking pensions, recruiting citizens to rally against retirees.
Our Legislators take campaign contributions from Chase and others to put us all in Ks so banks can get enormous fees and politicians get campaign contributions. The big banks were responsible for reducing ability to buy service time from 5 yrs to 3 yrs. TRS also have some better benefits not listed in this article, for example.
TRS applies overtime to calculate a retirees highest average years of salary, ERS doesn't allow any overtime to be used in highest average years of salary. I heard that the University of Texas Galveston supervisor allowed employees to double their salary so they can double their pension as they approached retirement.
Very unjust and strain on other TRS retirees. Most definitely not an isolated case. TRS has provided recent bonuses and 13th checks, ERS hasn't seen but one 13th check in last 20 years and no other compensation.
You need to police your own injustices in TRS and figure out another method of approaching inequality, because you may see some of your benefits reduced using this tactic. I am an ERS retiree for 11 years, and have not a single penny more annuity per month than when I retired.
Other ERS retirees are much worse off. I paid close to for three years service time Peace Officer rate that should have only cost and I have not received a single penny more compensation because I didn't meet 20 year PO requirement with State, although had PO time with cities and states. APD can retiree in 16 years. I got 59 percent of salary after 28 years, APD gives you 92 percent based on twice to three times the salary. Your benefits may be lacking but could be a lot worse.
If you want to compare yourself, compare yourself and retirement benefits to cities like Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio. Houston had a 4 percent COLA per year for many years until they turned the Houston citizens against their retirement system. Please don't compare yourself to ERS, but to the other cities of this state and even some other corporate pensions. Compare yourself to all the misused unemployment benefits and misuse of State funding to enable slackers and misuse of State funds for dubious programs.
As you read through the chart below, which outlines the stark differences between the two retirement systems in the State of Texas—TRS of Texas and ERS of Texas—you will undoubtedly see, quickly, there is no equity.
The extreme nature of this inequity is a result of the Legislative Session. Now, during the Legislative Session, there is talk that the 86th Texas Legislature is trying not to make our benefits worse. Your cost for repayment of ERS withdrawals will be the amount of contributions you would have paid to TRS had you been a member, plus applicable interest. If you have not withdrawn your contributions from ERS, you may transfer your total credits immediately by paying the difference in the amount of contributions you paid as an ERS member and the amount of contributions you would have paid as a TRS member, plus applicable interest.
Should you request a transfer of your ERS account to TRS but elect not to pay the difference at the time it is transferred, you will receive retirement credit with TRS for a pro-rata portion of the service.
These rules are intended to implement the provisions of the Government Code, Chapter , concerning the transfer of credit between the Teachers Retirement System of Texas and the Employees Retirement System of Texas and to provide a systematic method of funding the actuarial value of the annuity resulting from transferred service. The following words and terms, when used in this section, shall have the following meanings, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.
Each system shall certify on a monthly basis the total dollar amount of annuities paid by the system which are based on service credit transferred pursuant to Government Code, Chapter The amount certified shall exclude any portion of annuities paid consisting of post-retirement increases. Each system shall remit to the other system the amount certified within thirty days of receipt of such certification.
It is recognized that adjustments will be made from month-to-month as a result of such things as administrative errors, the death of the annuitant or a beneficiary, return-to-work, and recovery from disability by an annuitant. The systems will jointly agree on the administrative and accounting procedures to be established in order to ensure the transfer of funds pursuant to this section.
Both TRS and ERS laws require a separation from employment with any employer covered by the respective system for a period following a member's effective retirement date as a condition for retirement with a benefit from the respective system.
