What will new superman movie be about
And arguably more pressing: Who will direct? Sources say J. Abrams, who is producing the film, is not among the many possibilities being considered.
When Warners announced in February that celebrated author Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing the screenplay and Abrams is producing, it did not address the matter of helming. In a fitting twist, the director search is pitting DC against none other than Marvel.
As Warners looks to fill its Superman vacancy, Marvel is on the hunt for a Blade helmer and is combing through the same list. But the question will come down to what kind of filmmaker Bad Robot and Warners want: an up-and-comer who can be backed by Abrams, who knows his way around tentpoles and franchises? Or an established filmmaker like a Barry Jenkins or a Ryan Coogler? Abrams' Reboot. While some may have thought Abrams was a possibility to helm the movie in addition to producing, a source says adding him as director would be " tone-deaf.
Marvel's upcoming Blade movie is adding an additional wrinkle, with both studios looking at similar directors for their projects. There are many exciting options, and it's interesting to hear Marvel and WB are going head-to-head in their search for leaders of upcoming movies.
Since the Superman film is still in the early stages, it's likely it will be awhile before a directing announcement is made. The combination of Abrams and Coates is intriguing on its own, but the eventual director announcement should only increase enthusiasm for the project.
Likewise, interest in the Superman movie will reach new highs when a star is named, and the project becomes a bit more tangible. It makes sense many are rooting for Jordan after his scene-stealing turn as Black Panther 's complex villain Killmonger. However, whichever actor winds up with the part will no doubt do the Man of Steel justice, introducing audiences to an exciting new Superman.
Superman is an ideal. Why not have multiple Supermen going on? They have multiple Superman comic book storylines happening at the same time. There's definitely room for more than one Superman to exist in DC's upcoming slate of films. While studios may be hesitant to have concurrent portrayals of the same character for fear of confusing audiences, Joker proved that audiences are quicker than studios might think.
Cavill's Superman could easily coexist alongside a new Black Superman so long as their portrayals remain distinct from one another, just as Phoenix's tragic Joker set itself apart from Jared Leto's chaotic interpretation of the character. Although a Black Superman film may remain a contentious topic, it's important to remember that no idea is inherently flawed — it all comes down to execution.
