The main character, Tom Walker is portrayed as an epitome for greed, and is shown how this theme can corrupt someone's life. Throughout the story there are many symbolic clues Irving includes to hint to this story being an allegory.

Evil is an ever present aspect within the existence of humanity. Satan, a real and powerful being, constantly influences the world through his evil and manipulative ways in order to bring destruction and chaos to earth. John Faustus sells his soul to the devil in return for the conditions he specified in a contract. One of these conditions is that the demon Mephastophilis will be his servant.

Therefore, it could be argued that Faustus is more powerful than Mephastophilis. What is now known as a fictional character with a wicked laugh and a flying broomstick used to be a very much real charge that could cause someone their good reputation,their land and even their life The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a play that depicts the lives of Puritans during the period of the Salem Witch Trials.

During these trials, countless Puritan lives were lost at the suspicion of witchcraft and devil worship. One of those who are accused is the protagonist of the play John Proctor. John Proctor is a good man who is victim of one very detrimental mistake, one that impacts him as well as others.

Paradise lost; book I by John Milton starts in midias Res with invocation to the muse. Milton portrayed Satan as one of the most dynamic and complicated characters in Paradise Lost, book I.

Satan can be argued as villainous character as well as a tragic hero in this book. The idea of discovering witchcraft in one's own backyard is not only exciting, but it allows individuals to find an explanation for things that they otherwise cannot explain. For example, Mrs. Putnam's blaming her children's deaths upon witchcraft is easier than admitting that she did not give birth to healthy children, or that she cannot carry children successfully.

Explaining that Betty and Ruth's ailments result from witchcraft is also much easier than admitting that good Puritan girls were out dancing in the woods and attempting to cast spells and are now feigning illness to avoid punishment.

Even though Hale states a disclaimer at the beginning of Scene 5, nearly everyone expects him to find evidence of witchcraft; they will not be satisfied unless he does. As a result, Hale is overcome by the many descriptions of all of the unnatural events occurring in Salem: Betty's illness, Ruth's condition, Tituba's ability to conjure spirits, dancing in the woods, the death of the seven Putnam children, Martha Corey's strange books, and so forth.

He might explain any one of these events in isolation, but together, they serve as overwhelming evidence of witchcraft in Salem. Putnam's anger toward Rebecca only intensifies when Rebecca criticizes her for sending Ruth to conjure up the dead with Tituba.

Under normal circumstances, the Puritans would severely punish Mrs. Putnam for her actions, because they considered attempting to contact the dead and endangering the life of a child the Devil's work. However, Mrs. Putnam not only avoids punishment, but she manipulates Rebecca's reaction and her refusal to stay during Hale's examination of Betty as proof of Rebecca's involvement in the witchcraft. The second reason that Scene 5 is pivotal is because Abigail exerts her power and begins her quest to obtain Proctor.

Unsurprisingly, Tituba confesses to witchcraft when the townspeople threaten her with physical violence. Then also Betty. Abigail was desperate to save her reputation, so she came up with deceits that grew into a bigger deception that involved the plot to get rid of Goody Proctor Elizabeth.

If i was accused of being a witch i would do the same as Daniel, i would play the blame game better then they would. The people of the Puritan society think of themselves as perfect so they try to blame anything that goes wrong on the devil and the falsehood that the devil possesses people which is why they do dreadful things. If I were accused of being a witch, I would deny it flat out and call everyone stupid and delusional.

Abigail would be the most significant character because she is in control of everything. However she makes apparent that her reputation is much more important than the lives on dozens of people. Not to mention, I believe her deepest and inner desires to accuse everyone is to eventually accuse Elizabeth Proctor and rid of her to love John Proctor without interference. If i was accused of being witch wizard , I would admit it because you have to lie to survive. The most important character of accusation is Abigail.

She has some sort of power because she is the niece of Mr. Also she gains power because she does too much acting and drama, which allow people to listen carefully to her.
