Can you use softener on baby clothes
We all know the fabric softeners leaves our clothing soft and smelling fresh, but Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap , has warned parents over the danger of washing their babies clothes with fabric softener. Deyan explained baby clothes are normally treated with flame-resistant chemicals for safety reasons, but fabric softener reduces its efficacy and makes the material more susceptible to catching fire in the case of an accident or emergency.
Hence, he proposed alternative advice to follow instead. Parents should always check the material care label if unsure. Wash baby clothing at low temperature with a mild non-bio detergent, and do not use a tumble dryer and allow the clothing to dry naturally. Deyan also advises parents not to soak baby clothing for a long period as it can cause the flame-resistant chemicals to break down, and they should never bleach the clothing for the same reasons.
Or to be on the safe side, you could always invest in an eco-friendly detergent which is designed especially for sensitive skin. We always recommend washing all clothes, even baby clothes, at 30c or 40c degrees. This is plenty hot enough to get rid of any stains or dirt in clothes, plus it will also save you money and the environment, win win! The only exception here is when your little one is ill or a garment is heavily soiled, a higher temperature could be beneficial to blast any tougher germs that may want to linger around.
Well fabric conditioner is a saviour! Just check the label before adding fabric conditioner to your wash: some baby clothes have a flame-resistant coating on them that can be damaged by fabric softener.
The standard rules that you have followed for every other wash in your life still apply. Separate out colours from lights and dark's to stop colours from running. Read the label to make sure you are treating the garment in the best way when washing and drying. You should also keep fire-resistant clothing in another pile, or the specific coating on these garments may be damaged if mixed with other items.
